Nuneaton’s Newest Gem
Saffron Table brings authentic Punjabi homestyle dining, vibrant thalis, and craft mocktails to Nuneaton, transforming a modern venue into a heartwarming celebration of regional Indian culture and hospitality.

UNEATON, Warwickshire — For over fifteen years, residents of Nuneaton seeking genuinely regional Indian cuisine found themselves making regular pilgrimages to nearby culinary epicentres like Leicester or Birmingham. That landscape changed late last year when co-founder Manjit Kanwal and his family opened Saffron Table on Abbey Street.
Having previously run a small restaurant in his native Punjab before moving to the United Kingdom in 1993, Kanwal spent decades working across labour and security industries while holding onto a singular vision: bringing authentic, homestyle Indian dining and a craft-forward cocktail culture to his home town. Transforming a completely bare commercial space into a sleek, contemporary dining room, Kanwal personally designed every detail—from the moody vertical wood-panelled walls and deep turquoise velvet banquettes to the backlit, marbled bar that softly glows in shades of magenta and gold beneath delicate Edison globe lights. The atmosphere strikes an effortless balance between modern polish and inviting warmth, anchored by opulent floral installations near the entrance.
The restaurant’s name—suggested by Kanwal’s 16-year-old daughter—evokes the prestige of saffron, an auspicious spice historically prized above gold, paired with “Table” to signify a place of communal feasting. That spirit of hospitality (Atithi Devo Bhava—where the guest is treated as divine) radiates through front-of-house staff who guide diners through heat profiles, family traditions, and intuitive flavour pairings with genuine warmth.

An unmissable culinary gem where genuine Punjabi heritage, meticulous slow-cooked spices, and radiant family warmth shine on every plate.
A Craft Beverage Program & Street Food Starters
Beverages are no afterthought here. Kanwal and his team have built a extensive, craft-driven bar menu pairing traditional spices with inventive mixology. A signature spicy house mocktail served in a tall hurricane glass comes infused with tropical citrus notes and topped with delicate red chili threads, striking a vibrant balance between sweetness and subtle heat.
To begin, the kitchen presents the Amritsari Fish Pakora, a quintessential Punjabi street-food favoruite. Generous fillets of tender white fish are encased in a crispy, carom-infused (ajwain) gram flour batter. The brittle, golden crust gives way to succulent fish within, served alongside sliced red onions, fresh mint, and a tangy green chutney that cuts through the savoury crunch.
For a modern take on comfort food, the kitchen’s Keema Loaded Fries showcase a playful fusion. Crisp, golden fries are layered under a rich, slow-simmered spiced minced lamb (keema) warm with roasted cumin, coriander, and garam masala. Drizzled with a cooling herb-mint chutney, it’s a soul-satisfying dish that pair perfectly with a crisp, effervescent Virgin Mojito packed with freshly slapped mint and lime.
Tandoori Craft & Unhurried Dum Cooking
Vegetarians are treated with equal reverence at Saffron Table. The Paneer Tikka arrives as thick, pillowy slabs of Indian cottage cheese marinated in spiced yogurt, ginger, garlic, and turmeric before taking on a smoky char from the grill. Interspersed with charred bell peppers and crisp onions, the dish highlights the kitchen’s dedication to home-style vegetarian dining over standardized fare.
The true test of any authentic kitchen rests in its Chicken Biryani. Presented in a traditional hammered copper handy garnished with fresh coriander, a charred green chili, and a lemon wedge, the dish exemplifies unhurried dum cooking. Long-grain Basmati rice is slow-cooked in limited daily batches alongside chicken marinated overnight in ginger, garlic, and chili. Rather than overwhelming heat, the biryani delivers gentle, comforting warmth from whole dry-roasted cardamom, cloves, and bay leaves. True to Punjabi home dining, it is served with a house-made cucumber and red onion raita rather than heavy gravy sauces.

Sizzling Mains & A Sweet Conclusion
The star of the main courses is the Chicken Karahi, served piping hot in a rustic, cast-iron wok. The curry features tender chicken suspended in a rich, thick tomato and onion gravy finished with a delicate swirl of cream, julienned ginger, chopped coriander, and a whole dried red chili. Clinging satisfyingly to every piece of meat, the sauce yields smoky wok aromas and deep coriander-cumin undertones. Paired with a warm, pillowy garlic and coriander naan fresh from the tandoor, it represents Punjabi home-style cooking at its finest.

To finish, the meal closes on a comforting, traditional note with Warm Gulab Jamun. Served in a glass coupe, two golden milk-solid dumplings rest in a light syrup gently scented with cardamom and rosewater. Soft and yielding to the spoon, they offer a sweet, nostalgic conclusion to a feast defined by authenticity and heart.
In a landscape often dominated by standardized high-street curry houses, Saffron Table succeeds by staying firmly rooted in family history, regional pride, and uncompromised hospitality.
